Pet Grief Companion
Rabbit grief is real, and it is almost never treated that way.
Your rabbit knew your routines, responded to your voice, and built a life alongside yours. The loss is quiet, specific, and often completely invisible to the people around you. It deserves to be seen.
I'm Dawn, a certified Pet Death Doula. I offer virtual grief support across Canada and the United States for people who have lost a rabbit. Rabbit loss is one of the most dismissed forms of pet grief, and one of the most painful for exactly that reason.

What makes losing a rabbit its own kind of grief
Rabbits are deeply bonded companions who are widely misunderstood
Rabbits are often described as starter pets or low-maintenance animals. This is a mischaracterization. Rabbits bond deeply with their people, recognize individuals, communicate complex emotions, and can grieve the loss of a companion. The grief when they die is proportional to a bond that the world rarely acknowledges.
Rabbit loss is among the most minimized forms of pet grief
"It's just a rabbit" is something rabbit owners hear often and early. This disenfranchisement, grief that is not socially validated, tends to make rabbit loss harder to process. It can make people feel unable to talk about the loss without defending the significance of the relationship. You should not have to defend your grief.
Rabbits often die suddenly, leaving little time to prepare
Rabbits are prey animals and will often mask illness until they cannot. Many rabbit owners describe their rabbit appearing well and then declining rapidly, sometimes within hours. The shock and guilt that follow a sudden rabbit death can be acute, especially when it leaves no time for goodbye rituals.
Bonded rabbits can be left grieving their companion
Rabbits who live with a bonded partner often show significant behavioral changes after the death of their companion, including depression, reduced appetite, and searching. If you have a surviving rabbit, their grief is real and they may need extra attention, monitoring, and sometimes veterinary support.
