Pet Grief Companion
Losing a bird is losing a voice that knew your name.
They greeted you by name. They learned your moods. Some of them lived alongside you for decades. Bird grief, especially parrot grief, is among the least understood and most profound forms of companion animal loss.
I'm Dawn, a certified Pet Death Doula. I offer virtual grief support across Canada and the United States for people who have lost a bird. From the smallest finch to a decades-long parrot companion, every bird loss deserves support that takes the bond seriously.

What makes losing a bird its own kind of grief
Parrots and long-lived birds become true life companions
African greys can live 50 to 70 years. Amazon parrots, 40 to 60. Cockatoos and macaws, 30 to 80. Many bird owners outlive multiple human relationships while their bird remains a constant. The death of a bird who has known you through decades of your life is a loss that defies ordinary pet grief categories.
Bird grief carries a specific language loss
Many birds speak. They call your name, mimic your laugh, repeat phrases that were part of your shared routine. When they die, you lose not only their presence but the specific sound of your name in their voice. This form of loss is unlike any other in the pet loss world.
Bird loss is often invisible and unacknowledged
Birds are not included in most pet bereavement support. Workplaces rarely acknowledge it, and friends who do not keep birds often minimize the bond. This dismissal is particularly painful for people who have shared their lives with a bird for 20, 30, or 40 years.
Sudden bird loss is especially common and traumatic
Birds hide illness extremely effectively. Many bird deaths occur suddenly or after a very rapid decline, with no warning. The shock of finding a bird who appeared well just hours before is a specific kind of grief, and the guilt of wondering if you missed signs is nearly universal.
