Pet Grief Companion

Cat grief is real, even when the world doesn't treat it that way.

The weight of them in your lap. The purring that helped you sleep. The way they found you on the worst days without being asked. Losing a cat is a quiet, constant grief, and it deserves to be honored.

I'm Dawn, a certified Pet Death Doula. I offer virtual grief support across Canada and the United States for people who have lost a cat, whether the loss is fresh or whether you've been carrying it quietly for a long time.

What makes losing a cat its own kind of grief

Cat grief is often the most dismissed kind of pet loss

Because cats are stereotyped as independent and aloof, people often assume cat owners are less attached or that the loss is less significant. The opposite is frequently true. The bond between a cat and their person is often deeply intimate, and the loss is correspondingly profound.

The nighttime grief is specific to cat loss

Cats are often nocturnal companions. The absence of their weight on your feet, the purring that helped you fall asleep, the early morning visit before your alarm goes off: these nighttime rituals are among the most painful things to lose, and the most difficult to explain to others.

Long-lived cats leave especially deep marks

Cats commonly live 15 to 20 years. A cat who has been with you through your 20s, 30s, and 40s has known every version of you. They have been present for breakups, moves, grief, and growth. The loss of that kind of witness is not just the loss of a pet.

End-of-life decisions for cats often come suddenly

Cats are notoriously skilled at masking pain and illness. Many cat owners describe making the euthanasia decision with very little warning after a sudden decline. The speed of that decision, and the guilt that follows, can be particularly acute.
