Pet Grief Companion

Losing a horse is losing a 1,200-pound piece of your heart.

The grief is physical, financial, social, and profound all at once. You have lost a partner, a discipline, a community anchor, and a relationship that may have spanned decades. It is one of the most complex losses there is.

I'm Dawn, a certified Pet Death Doula. I offer virtual grief support across Canada and the United States for people navigating the death of a horse. Equine grief is among the least understood and most underserved forms of pet loss, and you deserve support that recognizes its full weight.

What makes losing a horse its own kind of grief

Horse loss involves layers that other pet loss rarely does

When a horse dies, you may lose your riding partner, your competitive career, your reason for going to the barn, your community of fellow riders, and a financial investment, all at once. The grief is not just for the horse. It is for the entire life that was built around them.

Horses live long enough to span entire chapters of your life

Horses commonly live 25 to 35 years. A horse you got at 18 may still be with you at 45. They have been present through relationships, moves, failures, and triumphs. Losing them is losing a witness to your whole adult life.

Euthanasia decisions for horses are often made under acute pressure

Many horses are euthanized following sudden injury, colic, or rapid decline. The decision often has to be made quickly, sometimes at the barn, sometimes without time to prepare. The grief that follows, particularly the guilt and second-guessing, can be acute and long-lasting.

Equine grief is rarely understood outside the horse community

People outside the equestrian world often cannot comprehend the depth of this bond. They may see it as the loss of a large animal rather than a primary relationship. This misunderstanding makes horse grief one of the most isolating forms of pet loss, and one of the most important to seek specific support for.
