Pet Grief Companion

Small bodies. Enormous grief.

Guinea pigs, hamsters, gerbils, chinchillas: the grief when these small companions die is real, specific, and almost universally dismissed. You do not have to justify the size of your loss to anyone.

I'm Dawn, a certified Pet Death Doula. I offer virtual grief support across Canada and the United States for people who have lost a guinea pig, hamster, or other small companion animal. The bond was real. The grief is real. You are in the right place.

What makes losing a guinea pig its own kind of grief

Small pet grief is the most dismissed form of pet loss

People who have never had a guinea pig often cannot fathom that the grief is significant. The minimization is swift and often comes even from pet-loving friends who draw a line at "small animals." When grief is not taken seriously by the people around you, it tends to make the loss significantly harder to carry — not easier.

Guinea pigs are often the first deep bond for children

For many children, a guinea pig is their first primary relationship with an animal. Their death is often a child's first encounter with loss. How the adults in a child's life respond to this grief has lasting effects on the child's relationship with loss, grief, and emotional honesty.

Short lives do not mean smaller love

Guinea pigs typically live 4 to 8 years. Hamsters, 2 to 3 years. These are short lives, but within them, deep bonds form. The shortness of the life does not reduce the significance of the relationship or the grief that follows the loss.

End-of-life decisions for small pets are especially complex

Not all veterinarians specialize in small animal care, and euthanasia options for guinea pigs and hamsters are not always straightforward. Many owners face the decision of when and whether to pursue expensive treatment for a small animal, and the guilt around those decisions can be significant.
